Winter Safety Tips - Avoiding Fire

2008-11-10

December, January, and February are the leading months for home fires and associated deaths in the United States. Heating equipment is the second leading cause of home-fire deaths in the U.S. and the leading cause during December and January.

The Home Safety Council offers the following tips to help families prevent fire- and burn-related injuries during the winter months - even in Florida.

  • Keep portable space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn, including bedding, furniture, and clothing.
  • Never drape clothing over a space heater to dry.
  • Keep children and pets away from space heaters.
  • Never leave children in a room alone when a space heater is in use.
  • Turn off space heaters before leaving a room or going to sleep.
  • Install at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home and inside or near sleeping areas.
  • Install at least one CO alarm near sleeping areas.
  • Never use an oven or range to heat your home.
